Pack for three settings
Most cruise days fall into three moods: lazy hours on deck, busy days ashore and evenings that call for something nicer. Pack a few pieces for each and you'll be covered.
Adults-only ships tend to have a stylish, relaxed feel in the evening. Think smart-casual and fun rather than black tie, but check the line's dress code for any themed nights.
The essentials list
Start here, then add what your itinerary needs.
- Passport and any other travel documents, in your carry-on
- Prescription medication in its original packaging, plus a few extra days' supply
- Two or three swimsuits, so one is always dry
- A cover-up and sandals for the pool deck
- Comfortable walking shoes for port days
- Evening outfits you love, and shoes you can dance in
- A light jacket or wrap for windy decks and cool restaurants
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
- A reusable water bottle and a small day bag
- Phone charger and a power bank for long days ashore
What goes in your embarkation-day bag?
Your checked luggage may take a while to reach your cabin after you board. Keep everything you need for the first afternoon with you, so you can start your vacation straight away.
- Documents, cards and medication
- A swimsuit and sunscreen
- A change of clothes for the first evening
- Chargers and anything fragile or valuable
Packing for the ports
Ports set the rest of your list. Caribbean days call for reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes and a dry bag. Mediterranean days mean lots of walking, a cover-up for churches and religious sites, and a card that works abroad.
Check the weather for each port the week you sail. Northern and transatlantic itineraries can be much cooler than you expect, especially on deck.
What to leave at home
Cruise lines restrict some items for safety, such as irons and certain electrical appliances. Check the line's prohibited items list before you pack, rather than finding out at security.
Leave room in your suitcase, too. Most people come home with more than they took.

What do you wear in the evening on Virgin Voyages?
Evenings tend to be smart-casual and relaxed. Check the cruise line's current dress code for any themed or dressier nights before you pack.
Should I pack a carry-on for embarkation day?
Yes. Your checked luggage can take time to reach your cabin, so keep documents, medication, a swimsuit and a change of clothes with you.
Do I need a power adapter on a cruise?
It depends on the ship's outlets and where you're coming from. Check the cruise line's information for your ship before you travel.
How many outfits should I pack for a 7-night cruise?
Plan one evening outfit per night or mix and match pieces, plus day clothes and swimwear you can rotate. Laundry options vary by ship, so check before you rely on them.
